Abstract:

The bulk of the collection consists of copies of letters that Maas sent to his granddaughter, Julia, from 1989-2007. The letters may include photocopies of other correspondence, photographs, programs, family trees, and additional documents and writings. The collection also contains a citizenship certificate for Zadock Abraham Koenigsberg issued in San Francisco (1866) and a genealogy of the Maas-Koenigsberg family made by James Maas.

James Maas was born in New York in 1920. He migrated to California with his family in 1930. He graduated from UCLA in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp in England during World War II. After receiving his doctoral degree in public health administration from UC Berkeley, he worked as a Public Health Administrator in San Francisco; was a Professor of Anthropology at the University of San Francisco; and served as the executive assistant to the chief of police in San Francisco. He was a life-member of the Sierra Club and served as the editor of its national outings newsletter.
